Mothers Who Blazed a Trail

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton can lay claim to many firsts: Famously, she's the first former first lady to be elected to public office and the first wife of a former president to run for president herself. But not long before she declared her intentions for 2008, Clinton was asked on "The View" if being a mother would give her an advantage as a presidential candidate. She responded in part, "We've never had a mother who ever ran for or held that position."Clinton's claim to be the first mother running for president isn't correct, according to several sources, including the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics. Clinton is actually the ninth mother to run for president of the United States.-- Donna Baver Rovito
