Researchers conducted DNA extractions from 96 bone, tooth and ivory specimens, enabling them to analyze 41 individual mammoths from Europe, Asia and North America. The specimens were originally found across a wide swath of eastern Russia and Alaska, an area known as Beringia because it was connected by a land bridge during the Ice Age.
