A History of Problems

West Potomac Park, the site of the Jefferson Memorial, is a man-made area created about a century ago. The spot was filled with mud dredged from the Potomac River shipping channel and has exhibited structural changes since its dedication in 1943.

Article | The sea wall at the Jefferson Memorial has sunk almost a foot in places since the monument was built, and the rate seems to have increased in recent years, according to a year-long study commissioned by the National Park Service.
