Former governor Mark R. Warner's prospects for replacing retiring Sen. John W. Warner (R) appear strong. If the election were held today, Mark Warner (D) would best former governor James S. Gilmore III or Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, Republicans who face a wide gap in name recognition.
