Grade Deflation

Goldman Sachs sold investors 12 "tranches" - or slices - of securities backed by risky, second-mortgage loans. Most were rated "investment-grade" by Standard & Poor's. A year and a half later, half of the tranches have been written off as losses, while the others have suffered significant ratings downgrades.
