Housing Slumps but Not on Wall Street

Foreclosures are mounting, home prices are deteriorating, and house sales are slumping. But the stock performance of home builders may suggest that the worst is past. In the past three months, shares of U.S. home builders were up 14.1 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index was down 11 percent. The industry hit a three-year low Jan. 8 and began outperforming the S&P on Jan. 22. Over the three-month period, 23 of 29 home builders have climbed.
