The States and Marriage

California has joined Massachusetts in allowing marriage licenses for gay partners. A handful of other states provide other forms of recognition to same-sex couples. Most states have either a law or a constitutional amendment saying that only a man and a woman can marry.

Article | Opponents of same-sex marriage say they will ask the California Supreme Court to delay the implementation of its ruling allowing gay couples to wed in the state as those on both sides of the debate gear up for a November ballot measure aimed at undoing the court's decision.
