In the opening days of the general-election campaign, Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama engaged in a sharp back-and-forth over tax policy, with McCain asserting that his Democratic rival would raise taxes on Americans of every background and with Obama arguing that McCain would be a continuation of the most fiscally irresponsible administration in history.
