It was once a discipline belonging only to a select few hitters, such as Rickey Henderson. But the last 20 years has seen a steady rise in the number of pitches per plate appearance in baseball, as more and more hitters have learned to work the count - a trend that has influenced everything from the increasing times of games to the demise of the complete game to the intense scrutiny on pitchers' pitch-counts.
