Schools By the Numbers

More than 800,000 students across the Washington area are heading back to class. Here are the demographic and academic indicators for local public schools. Pass rates represent scores for the 2008 Maryland School Assessments in grades 3 through 8, 2008 D.C. Comprehensive Assessment System in elementary grades and 2007 Virginia Standards of Learning exams in grades 3 through 8 and high school. This year's Virginia SOL scores and scores for the SAT college-admissions test are to be announced this week. Data also reflect The Post's Challenge Index, a ratio of the number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests given to the number of graduating seniors.
