Hazardous Air Bridge

In 1942, Japan occupied much of Burma, disconnecting a vital Allied supply route to China along the Burma Road. A high mountain aerial route, dubbed the "hump route," was the only option for the United States to continue its lifeline to China during the war. In three years, this treacherous air bridge claimed more than 1,300 people and about 500 aircraft. The airlift mission was discontinued after the Ledo Road was built in 1945.
