Downshifting in the New Millennium

Over the past eight years, the U.S. auto industry has driven deep into a morass. How deep? Between Jan. 1, 2001, and Nov. 11, 2008, GM and Ford together have lost $67.4 billion in market value and shed 245,000 jobs. That works out to more than a 90 percent decline in market cap for each company and more than a 30 percent cut in jobs. The auto industry worldwide is suffering, except for Honda, which has boosted its market value during the period by 13 percent and increased its employment rolls by 63 percent.
