Israel and Hamas at War

The ground invasion that began Jan. 3 follows a week-long aerial assault on targets across the densely populated territory. The United Nations estimates that a quarter of those killed have been civilians; both sides have rejected calls for a cease-fire. Israel is seeking to stop Hamas, an Islamist movement that rejects Israel's right to exist, from launching rockets into southern Israel. Here are the major attacks as of Jan. 3.
