Gender testing today: Unraveling a mystery

It's not hard to figure out if a man is masquerading as a woman, especially when he's wearing spandex and is required to produce a urine sample in front of a drug tester. So when a gender question comes up in an athletic setting - an extremely rare situation, usually raised by a female competitor who lost - it triggers the same multi-part medical quest that is used to determine causes of infertility and other reproductive problems. The tests cannot determine whether a woman is female; instead, they search for developmental abnormalities and leave the athletic or legal ruling up to authorities.
