Fort Hood, 60 miles north of Austin, is the largest Army base in the United States. More than 53,000 troops are stationed there, and more than 17,000 family members live on the base. It is the only two-division post in the U.S., home to the Army's 1st Cavalry and the 1st Army Division West. The latter division recently moved from Fort Carson, Colo., switching places with the 4th Infantry Division.
