U.S. military deaths in Afghanistan near 1,000

As of Tuesday, 996 U.S. military personnel have died since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom*. During the military initiative's first years, casualties in Afghanistan mainly occurred in the country's eastern provinces. Since 2009, violence and deaths have escalated in the southern region.
