Correction to This Graphic
This graphic on jobs held by Supreme Court justices before they were appointed to the court incorrectly indicated that the first court was made up of nine justices. The original court had six justices.
The job before justice
All of the current justices on the Supreme Court came directly from federal appeals courts. Elena Kagan is the third U.S. solicitor general to be nominated while serving in the job. Besides Kagan, five who have served at one time in the post have been nominated, and all but one - Robert H. Bork - were confirmed.
