Competing to build for the Navy

The Navy plans to award a contract for 10 Littoral Combat Ships, a new class of fast warships that are designed to do a range of missions, including chasing pirates and tracking down drug smugglers in coastal waters. The two teams competing for the lucrative deal are Lockheed Martin of Bethesda and Austal USA with its partner General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems.
