The Coast Guard's many missions

The U.S. Coast Guard has taken on many new missions over the years, many of them related to homeland security. In fiscal 2008, the hours logged by Coast Guard aircraft and vessels to protect the environment accounted for less than one-half of 1 percent of total mission hours.
