Only two of the 10 top self-financing candidates in the 2010 cycle came out victorious. The list of federal races does not include the most spectacular example of all: GOP candidate Meg Whitman, who spent $175 million of her own money in a loss to Democrat Jerry Brown in the California governor's race.
