This is a selection of the region's biggest companies, law firms, banks, nonprofit groups, hospital operators, universities and professional sports teams. We rank the groupings on various criteria. Most companies are ranked by 2009 revenue, for instance. Universities make the list by virtue of their fall 2010 enrollment, law firms by how many lawyers they employ locally, and so on.
