Extracting oil from tar sand

The proposed pipeline expansion would transport heavy crude to U.S. refineries from Alberta's "tar sands," or "oil sands," areas containing semi-solid petroleum, or "bitumen." Oil can be extracted in two ways -- both of which use enormous amounts of energy and water and emit toxic byproducts:
