Dangerous winds with gusts of more than 50 mph Saturday fueled blazes throughout the region, including in Laurel, Dale City and Germantown. More than 150 acres of the Shenandoah National Forest had burned by late afternoon.


A teacher at a Charles County high school was shot to death as he was driving home Tuesday afternoon when an apparent acquaintance stopped a car alongside him, got out and opened fire, the Charles County sheriff's office said. The other man then shot and killed himself.
