William Layton, a grain farmer on the Eastern Shore, said many farmers will continue to pay a premium for the seed that is resistant to Roundup weedkiller, which Monsanto also developed.
Today, the vast majority of the nation's two primary crops -- corn and soybeans -- grow from seeds genetically altered according to Monsanto company patents. Competitors say the company has stifled competition, and now it -- like IBM and Google -- has drawn scrutiny from U.S. antitrust investigators. The Obama administration will step up pressure on lenders participating in its massive foreclosure prevention program in a push for transparency that should provide new details about the industry's performance.
