17th & Q Streets, NW

Nestled between Dupont and Logan circles, the lively 17th Street corridor has a neighborly feel because of the relative dearth of hotels and office buildings. A number of restaurants, many with outdoor seating, line the street. Look up for hidden spots such as Skewers, a Middle Eastern restaurant that features belly dancing, and Sushi Taro, where low tables with floor seating are popular. Restaurants vary along 17th Street: Treo and Chaos inhabit the lively corner shown above, while Hank's Oyster Bar is nestled next door. Treo has a substantial and often raucous outdoor patio, Chaos is the home of a drag queen-hosted bingo night and Hank's, with its crisp white tableclothes, is the tamest of the set. Overlooking the scene stands the old Cairo Hotel, now an apartment building with a particularly good view -- it is the tallest residential building in Washington
