The Landing Zone

PANORAMA: BASE jumpers successfully complete their free-falls from atop the New River Gorge Bridge by safely reaching the ground at the designated landing zone almost 900 feet below. Family, friends and other curious spectators watch the action, cheering often for well-executed landings. Staff volunteers work to ensure jumpers clear the landing zone quickly so others will have space to land as well. BASE jumping instructor Tom Aiello explains why people participate in such a risky sport.
