Keith A. Washington, a former police officer and county homeland security official, was sentenced today to 45 years in prison for shooting two furniture deliverymen at his home in Accokeek.
Jan. 24, 2007: Washington shoots two furniture movers inside his home at about 7 p.m. County police initially say they expect to file assault charges against the movers but soon back off that assertion.
Feb. 2, 2007: One of the movers, Brandon D. Clark, 22, of Oxon Hill, dies at a hospital before he can describe the circumstances of the shooting. The other mover, Robert White, 36, is hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Feb. 23, 2007: Washington says Clark and White provoked the shooting and "intruded" into his home. Washington denies White's claim that he fired without provocation.
April 5, 2007: Kevin King, a real estate appraiser, alleges that Washington threatened him with a gun when he mistakenly knocked on Washington's door. Although Washington denies the allegations, he is relieved of his police powers and his police-issued gun.
June 14, 2007: A grand jury indicts Washington on charges of first- and second-degree assault and a handgun violation in connection with the King incident.
July 31, 2007: A grand jury indicts Washington on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.
Feb. 25: A jury finds Washington guilty of two counts of using a handgun in a crime of violence, and two counts of first-degree assault.
Feb. 28: While in jail awaiting sentencing, Washington is found with a handcuff key and had a "clear intention of escaping," according to court papers.
Today: Washington is sentenced to 45 years in prison.
