Pirates LF Brandon Moss left the game against the Mets yesterday after twisting his left ankle while batting against LHP Johan Santana.

This Story

Moss fell in the batter's box after hitting a ground ball to 1B Carlos Delgado. He could not apply pressure to his left foot and was helped off the field by Pirates trainers.

Moss was replaced in the top of the eighth by OF Jason Michaels, who moved over from right field. OF Steve Pearce replaced Michaels in right.

The 24-year-old Moss, who went 0 for 3, was hitting .193 (11 for 57) with two home runs and five RBI in 16 games since coming over from the Red Sox as part of the Jason Bay- Manny Ramírez trade. . . .

Pirates closer Matt Capps pitched 1 2/3 innings and walked three batters in a rehab appearance for Class AAA Indianapolis. There is no timetable for his return.

· BIGGIO HONORED: For the first time in a while, Craig Biggio felt butterflies.

The Astros retired Biggio's No. 7 before yesterday's game against Arizona, and the seven-time all-star waved to fans and touched his heart during a lively ceremony.

Biggio retired in 2007 after becoming the 27th player to reach 3,000 hits. He is Houston's career leader in seasons played (20), at-bats (10,876), hits (3,060), extra-base hits (1,014), doubles (668) and runs (1,844).

Dressed in a blue suit, Biggio hopped out of the dugout and walked across a red carpet toward a podium set up at home plate. He was flanked on both sides by about two dozen family members and friends, including ex-teammates Jeff Bagwell, Brad Ausmus, Bill Doran and the widow of Ken Caminiti, Biggio's teammate from 1989 to '94 and 1999-2000.

· WEEKS HURT: Milwaukee 2B Rickie Weeks left in the sixth inning of the team's 7-5 loss to the Dodgers because of a sprained left thumb.
