Everyday Eddie is back with Minnesota.
Eddie Guardado was acquired by the Twins yesterday in a trade with the Rangers for minor league pitcher Mark Hamburger. The 37-year-old Guardado was 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA in 49 1/3 innings for Texas, which recently made him its closer after an injury to C.J. Wilson.
Opponents are batting .220 against the left-hander this season.
Guardado has 187 career saves, 116 with Minnesota, where he played from 1993 to '03 and earned his nickname for the number of innings he logged. He'll help in the eighth inning, a problem for the Twins this season after setup man Pat Neshek hurt his elbow and landed on the disabled list.
Minnesota blew a 3-2 lead in the eighth and lost, 5-3, on Sunday to the Angels.
To make room for Guardado, the Twins designated 3B Mike Lamb for release or assignment before playing Seattle. After signing a two-year, $6.6 million contract with a team option for 2010, Lamb struggled at the plate and lost his job to Brian Buscher in June. The 33-year-old Lamb was batting .233 with one home run and 32 RBI in 236 at-bats.
· TIGERS: Detroit 3B Carlos Guillen left the game against Cleveland because of lower back spasms.
The team said Guillen is day-to-day.
Guillen flied out in the bottom of the fourth and was replaced by Ryan Raburn at third when the Tigers returned to the field in the fifth.
The veteran infielder started the game hitting .287 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI.
· HALL OF FAME: Allie Reynolds, Joe Gordon and Vern Stephens are among 10 players whose careers began before 1943 who will be considered by the Hall of Fame's constituted Veterans Committee when it meets on Dec. 7 .
Bill Dahlen, Wes Ferrell, Sherry Magee, Carl Mays, Mickey Vernon, Bucky Walters and Deacon White also will be on the ballot, the Hall said yesterday. The 10 finalists were selected by a committee of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. A 12-member committee of Hall of Famers, media and historians will vote.
Players must appear on 75 percent of the ballots to gain election. Results will be announced Dec. 8.
The next vote for pre-1943 players will take place in 2013.
