Turned to summer just a blink ago, its sinking sand now rushes to the end.

To the end of fresh corn, shucked on the back step over laughter and lemonade. The end of tank-top tan lines, alfresco Friday nights and after-dinner bike rides to get ice cream. Of staying up late with the sun and rising softly, sans alarm.

Of languid time -- to sit in the downy warmth, face to the sky, with nowhere else to be.

Labor Day marks the end of all that. And the return of schedules, homework exiles, marching-order moms and sanity-sucking commutes.

Tuesday it begins. But not until Tuesday . . .

So this weekend is it -- the last chance to savor summer. Three days, plus Friday night, to stave off impending routine and find fun.

Which doesn't have to mean skipping town. We found 12 options for really good times that could carry you away this weekend, without requiring too much travel beyond the Beltway.

There's an opportunity to scratch every itch. If it's nature you need, we've got that. Art, too, and history, drama, exercise and international culture. There's even a Saturday evening "campfire" in the middle of the city that you might not want to miss.
