After a bomb scare at Philadelphia's ballpark, authorities pointed the finger at a fuzzy green suspect -- the Phillie Phanatic.

This Story

Hours before the Phillies-Braves game on Wednesday night, a film crew shot a commercial of the mascot shooting heavily wrapped hot dogs from a launcher.

But someone inadvertently left three of the duct-taped hot dogs outside the ballpark, sparking security fears. Stadium employees were evacuated, and the bomb squad was called in. Only after the packages were blown up did authorities realize they had just exploded some sausages.

"We saw something that looked suspicious," said Michael Stiles, Phillies senior vice president of administration and operations. "We did the right thing. It turned out to be nothing."

· CUBS: RHP Ryan Dempster is scheduled to start the Cubs' playoff opener next week at Wrigley Field.

The former closer was tabbed by Manager Lou Piniella for Game 1 in the best-of-five division series.

· BREWERS: After throwing a short bullpen session yesterday, RHP Ben Sheets isn't sure if the sore elbow that has bothered him for more than a week will be ready in time to face the Cubs tomorrow.

Interim manager Dale Sveum said Dave Bush probably would start tomorrow, but left open the possibility of bringing Sheets back instead.

· COIN FLIP: The Mets won a coin flip with the Astros and would host a tiebreaker for the National League wild card next week if it's needed to decide a postseason berth.
