Dallas cornerback Terence Newman will be out at least another month after surgery for a sports hernia.
That means Adam Jones will remain in the starting lineup -- at least for today's game against Arizona.
Newman missed the preseason and the season opener because of a groin injury. He then played in three games before getting hurt again in practice last week. He had surgery Friday in North Carolina and the earliest he is likely to return is mid-November.
Newman, the 2003 first-round pick going into his sixth NFL season, earned his first Pro Bowl appearance last season after missing the first two games of the regular season with an injured right foot. In his first four seasons, Newman started every game.
The NFL is investigating Jones's scuffle with his bodyguard, but said its review won't be completed until next week. The Dallas Cowboys have said they won't discipline Jones, but it's unclear if the league will take any punitive action.
Six weeks ago, Jones was fully reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell from a 17-month suspension, including the entire 2007 season, that followed a series of off-field problems.
Jones got into a scuffle at a downtown Dallas hotel Tuesday night with a member of a security detail the Cowboys provided to be with the cornerback at all times.
Dallas will be without two safeties today. Pro Bowler Roy Williams (fractured forearm) returned to practice on a limited basis this week but will miss his fourth consecutive game. Patrick Watkins (neck) is also out.
· BROWNS: Tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. remains hospitalized with an undisclosed illness, making it more likely he won't play in tomorrow night's game against the New York Giants.
Winslow missed a fourth straight practice yesterday morning. He was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic on Thursday for tests and evaluation after feeling ill for several days.
Team spokeswoman Amy Palcic said it's unclear whether the Pro Bowl selection was going to spend last night in the hospital. She said there's still a 50-50 chance Winslow will play tomorrow against the defending Super Bowl champions.
Winslow has undergone four knee surgeries and has had to play through pain throughout most of his four-year NFL career. His illness is not believed to be related to any of his previous injuries.
· BENGALS: Place kicker Dave Rayner signed yesterday, giving Cincinnati another place kicker with Shayne Graham hampered by a sore groin.
Graham didn't practice on Thursday or Friday and is listed as questionable at the New York Jets. The Bengals also are missing quarterback Carson Palmer, who will be no better than the backup behind Ryan Fitzpatrick because of a sore passing elbow.
Rayner has played in 41 games with Indianapolis, Green Bay, Kansas City and San Diego, connecting on 41 of 58 field goal attempts.
