HIGH POINT, N.C.
Like they do every fall and spring, the mandarins of the furniture business gathered in High Point last month to introduce new designs just as consumers were flinging their 401(k) statements into the trash.
The economic meltdown has created a tough situation for furniture manufacturers and retailers, whose sales are suffering from the housing market collapse, credit freeze and crisis in consumer confidence. In the midst of the industry-wide pain, however, many manufacturers worked hard to come up with designs to entice cash-strapped customers.
