On the Go
The Old and the New (and Quirky, Too)
The economy has made conspicuous consumption passe, but quaint consumption -- sifting through markets, buying vintage, meeting the actual person who made your jewelry -- couldn't be hotter. This weekend, one market in Loudoun County lays antiques right out on the lawn (because musty old showrooms are so old economy); in Silver Spring, another boasts all things handmade.
-- This weekend, Old Lucketts Store Antiques hosts its annual two-day Spring Market, which brings in more than 100 antiques dealers from around the country. Dealers bring the goods, and you can bring your family, because the store is also bringing in live music and food. Judging from photos from last year's fair, you'll find plenty of the baroque sofas, chairs and mirrors that are so popular right now, and kitschy goods as well.
$7; children younger than 12 are free. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. 42350 Lucketts Rd., Leesburg. 703-779-0268 or http:/
-- About this time last year, Silver Spring got its own mini Crafty Bastards. This year, Crafty will remain in Adams Morgan (it's set for early October), but MoCo gets the brand-new event Handmade Mart, an outdoor indie craft fair helmed by the head of Rock-n-Romp and the executive director of Crafty Bastards (go figure). Among the more than 50 vendors are Fisticuffs Leather, Jon Wye, Biggs & Featherbelle and Tina Seamonster. Nearby arts center Pyramid Atlantic is hosting workshops, and there's music, too (this being an indie craft fair, it's only right that it's indie rock from bands including Pash and the Aquarium).
Vintage Virginia Wine Festival
Get away to scenic Bull Run this weekend for this annual two-day fest, with a focus on Virginia wines. Pick your pleasures from more than 350 wines (from 50 wineries). A slew of party-starting bands, including Beleza Brasil and Big Sam's Funky Nation, perform and revelers can also check out crafts and food vendors who'll be hawking their goods on site. Advance tickets, $25; children and designated driver admission, $5-$16. At the gate, admission is $30; children and designated drivers, $8-$22. 11 a.m.-6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday. Bull Run Regional Park, 7700 Bull Run Dr., Centreville. Visit http:/
