A woman who was shot last week in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County, leading to a 24-hour standoff between the gunman and police, died on Friday, Fairfax police revealed Monday.

This Story

Hilary E. Bradford, 36, apparently was arguing with her ex-boyfriend, John T. Valentini, 44, outside Valentini's house in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood last Tuesday evening. Bradford and Valentini had an 8-year-old son together.

Valentini shot Bradford once, and then went inside his house, where his son and current girlfriend were staying. The three stayed inside the house through Tuesday night and into Wednesday, while police tried to negotiate Valentini's surrender. When police lost contact with Valentini Wednesday afternoon, they decided to enter the home and Valentini shot himself once in the head about 6:30 p.m, Fairfax police said.

Valentini died early Thursday. Bradford, a nurse who lived in the 5900 block of Chesterbrook Road in McLean, was pronounced dead at 2 p.m. Friday, police said Monday. Bradford is the seventh homicide victim in Fairfax this year.
