Hillary Rodham Clinton has devoted enormous attention to Latin America and the Caribbean since becoming secretary of state, visiting 17 countries in the region in the first 18 months of her tenure -- far more than any previous secretary. In the past, the region has been left off the chief diplomat's itinerary as he or she chases problems in various hot spots, but Clinton has sought to demonstrate an interest in the issues of the often-forgotten Americas.
