The date is now set for the royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton; April 29th at Westminster Abbey. That is the same spot where Queen Elizabeth was married and where Princess Diana's funeral was held in 1997.

LONDON - The date is out: Prince William will wed Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey on April 29, in a celebration set to be Britain's biggest royal event in 30 years.

This Story

In announcing the spring date - heavily anticipated since the couple announced their long-awaited intentions to marry last week - the office of Prince Charles, Clarence House, noted that the royal family will pick up the substantial bill for the wedding, set to cost tens of millions of dollars. The decision was a bow to the new age of fiscal austerity in Britain.

The royal wedding - poised to be the largest since William's parents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, married in a fairytale nuptial July 29, 1981 - is set to draw millions of well-wishers onto the streets of London from across Britain and beyond. Nevertheless, it is likely to be a more subdued affair than Charles and Diana's, in part because William is still second in line to the throne.
