| Alongside the political struggle in Belarus is a broader social struggle, including artists, academics and non-governmental organizations working to maintain a civil society independent of the government. They too struggle to find ways to balance working within the law, and subverting it when necessary. Among them are the film maker Jury Chascavacki, whose 1996 documentary "Ordinary President" mocked his country's defeatism and the passivity of its voters. Belarus' most popular rock group, NRM, has also been cut off from its public, but its music also circulates widely on recordings. |
