New Country, New Job

Since May 2004, people from the poorer parts of Eastern Europe are increasingly leaving their homes in pursuit of work and better opportunity in richer European Union countries. Ireland, which has one of Europe's fastest-growing economies, has encouraged migration of labor and those newcomers from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Russia, are filling vacancies at construction sites and in factories and pubs.

Janis Neulans, a native of Riga, Latvia, left his home for Ireland in October 2005, with dreams of warmer winters and fatter pockets. Washington Post reporter Kevin Sullivan followed Neulans as he searched for employment.
