A Modern Inaugural Returns to Williamsburg

When governor-elect Timothy Kaine takes the oath of office in Williamsburg on Saturday, he will be the first official to do so since Thomas Jefferson in 1779. The differences between the 18th century inaugurals and modern ones, however, are stark. For one, the event in 1779 only lasted long enough for Jefferson to be sworn in. In this video, historians trace the evolution of this simple ceremony to the lavish event of today.
