Smith's coverage of Kosovo in 1998 won the World Press Photo of the Year award. In this series, Smith captures the ethnic Albanians' emotional return to Kosovo and the challenges they faced in rebuilding their homes and lives. Smith joined The Post in 1985 after working at the Palm Beach Post in Florida as well as The Post's cross-town rival the Washington Times.
