"I really like a broad range of assignments," says Dayna Smith, "though I probably specialize a bit more on social issues and documentary-type photography." Smith's coverage of Kosovo in 1998 won the World Press Photo of the Year award. In this series, Smith captures the ethnic Albanians' emotional return to Kosovo and the challenges they faced in rebuilding their homes and lives. Smith joined The Post in 1985 after working at the Palm Beach Post in Florida as well as The Post's cross-town rival the Washington Times. Born in Sioux Falls, S.D., Smith and her husband, Peter Cary, an investigative reporter for U.S. News and World Report, have two sons Mack and Cal.
