ARIZONA 5
:
Southeast - Tucson
Located in the state's southeast corner bordering New Mexico and Mexico,
the 5th contains a mix of swing voters and independents who often favor
moderates in national elections. Nearly 80 percent of the district's
registered voters reside in Pima County, and most of those live in the
Tucson metropolitan area.
Within Tucson's city limits, Democrats set the political scene, which is
environmentally focused and influenced by the liberal U. of Arizona. The
city's surrounding communities - dominated by affluent, retired and military
populations to the city's northwest and southeast - favor Republicans.
Democrats have the majority outside of the metropolitan area, in Graham and
Cochise counties.
Tucson hosts a large number of high-tech manufacturing companies,
including several large defense contractors and aerospace firms. Tourism,
particularly in Tucson, also contributes to the 5th's economic base.
