ARIZONA 6
:
Northeast - Flagstaff; Navajo reservation
The 6th encompasses the northeastern third of Arizona and is home to the
state's most racially, geographically and economically diverse populations,
as well as its most competitive politics. A classic swing district, the
6th's voter registration is split, with 43 percent of the voters in each of
the two dominant parties.
More than half of the 6th's voters live in white, affluent and rapidly
growing population centers surrounding Phoenix in Maricopa County. Members
of these communities - in Gilbert, Scottsdale and Mesa - vote overwhelmingly
Republican.
The district's northeastern quadrant belongs to the Navajo Nation and
smaller reservations. Average incomes in the rural north are the lowest in
the state, at about $20,000 per household, and unemployment is high.
Although Democrats have the upper hand in these rural lands, some voters in
the agricultural, logging and ranching industries have conservative
viewpoints.
While environmental activism has shrunk the 6th's logging industry,
high-tech growth in the Phoenix area and mining and agriculture throughout
the 6th continue to bolster the economy.
