North and East - Chico; Redding
The 2nd is one of the largest districts in the state, encompassing
California's northeast corner. The district borders Oregon to the north and
Nevada to the east and is California's least densely populated district. Two
of its counties, Sierra and Nevada, are named for the mountain range that
runs through them.
Only a couple of population centers dot this timber-heavy district,
which is largely white and Republican. A large, rural Mormon population in
the northern part of the district helps solidify the Republican vote. Two
counties, Siskiyou and Plumas, have a noticeable Democratic tilt. Redding,
the largest city in the district, sits in Shasta County, about 160 miles
north of Sacramento. To the south in Butte County is Chico, home to a
California State U. campus.
The 2nd has looked for ways to boost tourism and recreation in recent
years as the major industry, timber, fell in a steady decline in the 1990s.
It also had to fight to save its agriculture industry from harsh weather -
after flooding in 1997, all of the district's 10 counties were declared
disaster areas.

Dormant Mount Shasta volcano is the southernmost peak of the Cascade
Mountains; Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. in Chico; Republican presidential
nominee Bob Dole fell from a stage onto a group of photographers at a rally
in Chico in 1996.
