CALIFORNIA 26
:
San Fernando Valley
The lower- to middle-class 26th sits in the northeastern San Fernando
Valley and encompasses a large portion of Los Angeles. It also takes in the
small city of San Fernando in the north, and North Hollywood in the south.
Once composed of predominately white, suburban Los Angeles communities, the
area has attracted blacks and large numbers of Hispanics who are bolstering
the 26th's already hefty Democratic voter registration edge and are being
elected to state and local offices.
The Northridge earthquake in 1994 destroyed many homes in Sylmar, one of
the few L.A. communities that still has room for growth. Also hit was San
Fernando, a middle-class city to the south where 83 percent of residents are
Hispanic. Sun Valley, an industrial and predominately white working-class
area, is on the 26th's eastern edge.
The 26th has not seen as much economic recovery as other parts of the
San Fernando Valley. It has some manufacturing plants, but Van Nuys lost its
General Motors plant in 1992, and most industry is based in the northern
communities of Pacomia and Sylmar. By 2000, residents hope to benefit from
an economic boost expected from a new retail center and industrial park at
the old GM site.
