Coastal Orange County
The 45th is a comfortably Republican district with an eclectic mix of
senior citizens, surfers and aerospace workers. It has two distinct
communities: the coastal region, which has many affluent areas, and the
interior, which is more blue-collar, with a slightly higher number of
Democrats.
At Seal Beach, which anchors the coastal section, two-thirds of the
city's residents are 65 or older and about a third live in Leisure World - a
seniors-only community. Down the coast is Huntington Beach, or "Surf City,"
a hub for both surfers and aerospace workers, many of whom work at the
Boeing plant that is the prime design and manufacturing facility for the
space station and Delta rocket.
The 45th's interior, which includes Westminster, Fountain Valley and
parts of Garden Grove and Costa Mesa, tends to be less affluent than the
coastal cities and includes solidly middle-class residential areas. Many of
the interior's blue-collar workers are employed by aerospace companies
within the district or in Anaheim, Torrance or Long Beach.
