COLORADO 2
:
Northwest Denver suburbs; Boulder
The conservative trend sweeping the West has started to infiltrate the 2nd,
where Boulder's liberal granola culture permeates much of the community.
Once solidly Democratic, the 2nd is now the most contentious battleground in
the state.
The change can be traced to new residents who have poured into Boulder
County and Denver's northern suburbs, many of them more conservative than
Colorado natives. Registered Democrats now have only a slight edge over
Republicans.
Traditional liberal issues, such as the environment and urban sprawl,
still play heavily here. Rocky Flats Arsenal plutonium plant (in the 1st),
now undergoing cleanup, remains a concern. Education ranks as a high
priority for the 2nd, home to the state's flagship university and several
federal research labs. But newcomers - and anyone who can afford home in
Boulder's high-priced real estate market - tend to be more fiscally
conservative than voters past.
