COLORADO 4
:
North and east - Fort Collins; Greeley
The 4th, covering the eastern plains, looks more like Kansas than
Colorado. Intensive irrigation has turned these prairies where buffalo
roamed into productive wheat and corn fields. Cattle production in
Colorado's eastern counties ranks among the highest in the nation. But as
demand for beef continues to fall and wheat prices decline, ranchers and
farmers face hard times.
Fort Collins - the district's largest city and home to Colorado State U.
- sits more than 50 miles from Boulder and Denver, but it's been able to
cash in on the recent economic boom in the Front Range. Some high-tech
industry has moved into the city, and the relatively low cost of living has
attracted new residents.
The 4th has a long history of supporting GOP House members, and most of
the 4th includes rural Republican territory. An exception is Fort Collins,
which tends to support Democrats in local elections. Registered Democrats
outnumber Republicans in nearby Adams County, with its generally blue-collar
workforce. And the sparsely populated southeastern counties closer to New
Mexico also tend to lean away from the GOP.
