IOWA 3
:
South Central - Ames; Burlington
Taking in 27 counties, nearly 14,000 square miles and six media markets,
the 3rd gives a fair picture of Iowa. It includes relatively well-off urban
and suburban areas, as well as rural counties, industrial cities and
scattered towns with hopes for economic development.
Ames is the district's largest city and is home to Iowa State U., about
30 miles north of Des Moines (in the neighboring 4th District). About
one-fourth of the district's residents live in the counties near Des Moines.
The 3rd's other population center is along the Mississippi River in the
district's southeast, in Des Moines and Lee counties. Unions still have
influence in the area, but an economy once centered on manufacturing is
headed toward tourism and riverboat gambling. The rest of the district's
residents are spread across Iowa's agriculture-based southern tier.
While the 3rd leaned Democratic historically, it has turned into a swing
district in recent years. Democrats do well in blue-collar communities along
the Mississippi River, as well as in Ames and surrounding Story County,
although the latter is willing to split tickets. The GOP is strong in the
district's vast, rural southern tier.
