ILLINOIS 7
:
Chicago - Downtown; West Side
The 7th stretches from the Loop, Chicago's downtown business district,
to the DuPage County line, taking in the well-to-do western suburbs of Oak
Park and River Forest. The eastern end houses most of Chicago's gems - the
Sears Tower, the plush high rises of River North, the Magnificent Mile
shopping district - but most of the district lives in the poverty-stricken
neighborhoods that stretch from the western Loop to the edge of the county.
Except for a few communities of middle-class blacks, the West Side is
rife with gang violence, unemployment and crumbling infrastructure. The
situation is beginning to change in the West Loop, once dominated by the
Cabrini-Green housing project, where young couples and development companies
have started to rehabilitate old apartment buildings and warehouses, turning
them into condos and lofts.
The district fills with white commuters during the day, but two-thirds
of the district's permanent residents are black, making the 7th solidly
Democratic. The only exception is the far western suburbs, where Republicans
are often elected to local offices.
